Mobile App Load Time

People’s patience for a cumbersome and clumsy mobile site or app is waning. They expect to move through a brand’s mobile experience at lightning speed. There are a few simple steps marketers can take to eliminate speed bumps and ensure every customer’s need for speed is met.

When your site or app is clumsy or slow, 29% of smartphone users will immediately switch to another site or app if it doesn’t satisfy their needs (that is, they can’t find information or it’s too slow). In fact, of those who switch, 70% do so because of lagging load times And 67% will switch if takes too many steps to purchase or get the desired information.

from a survey, It is observed that users prefer to move to other apps if the app is slow in performance.

Case Study

Walmart Improves Mobile Performance With Faster Load Times

In fall 2014, visitors to Walmart’s mobile site were confronted with a blank screen for 7.2 seconds before content was loaded. In just under a year, the company reduced page load time to 2.9 seconds.

Walmart.com shaved more than four seconds from its load time by removing several of the barriers that had been impeding the page from rendering: JavaScript blocking, slow custom fonts, and unoptimized image files that had to be downloaded.

In the end, for every second of improvement, Walmart.com experienced up to a 2% conversion rate increase.

App Size and Minimal Dependency

The app should work on every network ie. 2G/3G. Any user should be able to download it to their respective phones without thinking about space. We can not compromise these factors if we are planning to reach the maximum user base.

Minimizing the use of third-party libraries will also help us to reduce app loading time and app sizes as well. A choosy approach while selecting a third party is very important.

I found one very good example of the impact of app size on this blog, Where it is clearly found that how app size reduces the downloads. Check below images for details.

Thanks for reading this article. I will share more details about reducing app sizes, selecting correct fonts/images and other details in my next blog. If you find this article useful please share and comments.
